Location, Location, Location

We’ve got access to over 4,000 acres of waterfowl hunting property in Northern California’s Sacramento Valley Area. The hunting locations include flooded rice fields, natural habitat and dry/semi-dry grain fields in areas from Colusa to the Nelson/Richvale area, on both the East and West side of the Sacramento River. All land is privately owned and managed.

The Blinds

You will hunt in a pit blind stand up blind, or layout blind, depending on the location of your hunt. All of our blinds are equipped with comfortable adjusting chairs and blinds are brushed or dressed with natural or artificial material for best concealment. Using top-of-the line decoys, our decoy spreads vary in size from 1 or 2 dozen to 1,000+, depending on the hunting location. Decoys are moved regularly, based on birds’ reaction to the spreads, allowing for some great decoy hunting.

Before the Hunt

All of our Hunters will hunt with their own groups; we do not combine/mix groups when you book a hunt with us. After booking a hunt with South Wind, you will be contacted 2 days prior to your hunting adventure to go over some details on the location and bird activity in the area. The day before your hunt, you will be notified of exact hunting location, determined by the scouting reports. We’ll look to get you in the optimal location based on our scouting and our previous/recent hunting reports. After a detailed report and directions to the hunting location, you will meet your guide or guides in the early morning or afternoon, depending on the time of day booked.

The Hunt

Hunters will get the necessary equipment together for the hunt. Your guide will then ride you out to the blind on an ATV. After getting familiar with your blind, your guide will explain the direction of the flight and possible shooting scenarios you may encounter.

Our guides do whatever it takes to make your hunt as memorable and successful as possible. They all have years of experience and great duck calling skills and the ability to read duck behavior and tells. Our retrieving dogs are also skilled and experienced and an important part of most hunts.  Clients may choose to bring their own dogs as well. After the hunt, at hunters’ request, we can advise on or arrange for bird processing and/or taxidermy.

Our clients range from Junior/inexperienced hunters to expert water-fowlers that have lots of knowledge and little time to commit to a private blind. They enjoy the convenience of just showing up and hunting with South Wind.
